Fall Tournament Highlights

Flower, Stewart, Anisimova and Finkelstein compete for ITF Titles in Texas

Weil players competed this October in their first ITF Tournament in El Paso, TX and came away with a great experience and a lot of wins!

On the girl's side, Kirsten Flower reached the Girls 18s Singles Semifinals and the Doubles Finals with team mate Maria Anisimova, while Kallim Stewart reached the Boys 18s singles semis and doubles semifinals with Weil mate Josh Finkelstein. Ahmed Ismail of Egypt reached the 2nd round before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the tournament. Flower defeated 3rd seed Caitlyn Whorisky and 9th seed Anna Smith on her road to the semis and the girls team beat the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams in doubles. Stewart took out 2nd seed Gustavo Lopes and in the doubles defeated the 4rth seeds to reach the semis.

Weil's Ass't Director of Tennis Greg Haywood traveled with the team and felt the players competed well during the tournament," Kirsten really played outstanding in most of her matches and Kallim was so close to reaching the singles finals. And Josh and Maria improved every match. I am very pleased with our performance in our first ITF. The player's behavior was outstanding throughout-very professional"

Academy Director Mark Weil sees this trip as a warm-up for the ITF's to come in December," Kallim, Kirsten and Maria have proven that they are at the top of their USTA Sections and very close to the top of their Age groups in the US. I think it's a fun challenge for them to see where they stand internationally as 16 and 17 year olds. I expect all of them to be competitive in the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowls-I wouldn't be at all surprised if one of them knocks off a seeded player or two from another country. These kids may not be the most talented players, but they have heart and guts and big determination. I'm looking forward to the ITF's in Florida."
